Heidi gets help

The beautiful lost shepherd-mix came to Friends of Chicago Animal Care and Control (FCACC) after nearly losing her life one night in early February on a Chicago expressway. She was rushed to a private 24-hour emergency clinic for immediate care as the regular city shelter clinic was closed for the night. The impact with a vehicle had sliced her right leg wide open. The doctors realized it was too late to save the limb. An amputation was going to be necessary. FCACC gave the go-ahead to start the procedure.

Fortunately, Heidi came through the ordeal without a hitch. It wasn't easy at first to walk on 3 legs but she did it. Then her owners were found but sadly, didn't want her back. But Heidi again got lucky. A clinic vet tech volunteered to foster her. Another staff member has since stepped up to adopt her!

If it weren't for caring people like our FDF donors, Heidi's chances would have been slim to none. There is no vet care at the city shelter after it closes at 7:00 PM. The animals rely completely on private funding from FCACC and its donors to arrange private emergency care through the late hours.
